Your Ultrasound with Diagnostic Healthcare

What is an ultrasound scan?

You have been referred by your doctor for an ultrasound scan, which will be undertaken by Diagnostic Healthcare. An ultrasound is a way of getting pictures of the inside of your body without having to use X-rays. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves. These sound waves bounce off the internal organs and are then picked up and shown as a picture on a monitor.

How to prepare for an ultrasound scan?

Full details of how you should prepare for your appointment will be in your separate appointment letter from Diagnostic Healthcare. This may involve not eating prior to the examination or filling your bladder. Please read your appointment letter carefully.

What type of scan will I be having?

If your doctor has referred you to us for an Abdominal, Renal, Musculoskeletal or Scrotal scan, you will be having an external scan only.

What does an external scan involve?

An external scan involves passing a small handheld probe over the area being examined. Lubricating gel will be used on your skin to allow the probe to move smoothly. You shouldn’t feel anything other than the ultrasound probe and gel on your skin (which is often cold).

What can I expect at my appointment?

Ultrasound examinations are usually painless and easily tolerated by most patients. Most types of ultrasound examinations are completed within 15 to 30 minutes and are performed by either a Radiologist or a Sonographer.

When you arrive at our clinic for your appointment, our Sonographer/Radiologist will provide you with a full briefing on what will happen during your appointment.

In most cases, you will lie on a medical couch and the clinician will apply a water-based gel on the area to be scanned and then pass a small handheld probe over the skin and over the part of the body being examined.
